Jesus’ Invitation to Discipleship
THE CALL OF MATTHEW
Matthew 9:9-13
As Jesus passed on from there, he saw a man named Matthew sitting at the customs post. He said to him, “Follow me.” And he got up and followed him. While he was at table in his house, many tax collectors and sinners came and sat with Jesus and his disciples.
The Pharisees saw this and said to his disciples, “Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?” He heard this and said, “Those who are well do not need a physician, but the sick do. Go and learn the meaning of the words, ‘I desire mercy, not sacrifice.’ I did not come to call the righteous but sinners.”
Reflection: Accepting Our Calling
A calling involves Jesus’ movement, His invitation, and our response. Jesus moves continuously in Scripture. He is in constant motion. He goes up a mountain. He enters cities. He walks by the sea. He goes into houses. He passes by people.
In contrast, the ones He calls are usually motionless. Matthew was sitting at the customs post. James and John were sitting in their boat. Levi was sitting in the tax booth. It is Jesus that invites future disciples to take part in the movement and join Him.
Are we prepared to respond by accepting and entrusting our life to His words?
